Changes in dam reservoir operations can alter downstream river environments and potentially affect aquatic organisms. During my doctoral studies, I worked on developing an assessment method to detect such impacts using stress-response biomarkers in aquatic insects.

Currently, my research focuses on developing simple methods for assessing reservoir and river environments, investigating reservoir water quality using numerical models, and developing methods to evaluate sediment that can cause abrasion and damage to hydropower turbines.

Throughout both my master’s and doctoral studies, I conducted research involving living organisms. This type of research does not always proceed as expected, and it can often feel as though failures continue one after another. However, I learned to examine the data carefully, appreciate unexpected discoveries, and reflect on why an experiment or approach did not work. Repeating this process and continuing to work patiently and persistently have also been valuable in my current work.

When you feel uncertain or stuck in your research, I recommend discussing it with others rather than trying to solve everything on your own. The people around you are there to support you and are all on your side.
